Regional Managing Editor

Overview

The regional managing editor provides editorial leadership for multiple newspapers and their websites in Central New York, overseeing newsroom operations for five weekly publications and a monthly magazine in Syracuse, with some involvement in daily newspaper operations in Cortland and Oswego. The position includes coverage responsibilities as well as editorial oversight.

This role delivers high-quality journalism across multiple publications while managing day-to-day newsroom workflows, mentoring reporters and editors, coordinating print and digital production, and driving community engagement.

The ideal candidate is an experienced journalist and newsroom leader with strong editing, reporting, organizational, and coaching skills who can manage multiple deadlines and publications simultaneously.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead editorial operations for multiple newspapers and special sections, including print and digital production.
  • Provide compelling hyper-local news, sports, features, obituaries, police and court coverage, social news, and community events.
  • Provide or manage municipal and community coverage, enterprise reporting, and breaking news.
  • Supervise, coach, and evaluate reporters, editors, photographers, and other newsroom personnel.
  • Edit stories for accuracy, clarity, fairness, style, grammar, and legal compliance; review wire reports for news relevant to local audiences.
  • Manage staffing schedules and workflow priorities while meeting all publication deadlines.
  • Develop content strategies that increase readership, audience engagement, and digital traffic; use audience metrics to improve performance across digital and social platforms.
  • Build strong community relationships through sound journalism, involvement, and open communication; represent the organization at community events.
  • Work closely with advertising, circulation, production, and executive leadership to support organizational goals.
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable newsroom culture; uphold the highest standards of journalism ethics and protect the organization from libel, defamation, privacy, and related legal risks.

Qualifications

  • Strong news judgment and understanding of community journalism.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills, with knowledge of AP style and media law.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams and manage multiple projects under deadline pressure.
  • Experience with digital publishing platforms, social media strategy, audience analytics, and content management systems.
  • Five years of newsroom experience preferred, including supervisory or management responsibilities.
  • Experience overseeing multiple publications or newsrooms, growing audiences, and coaching journalists preferred.
  • Experience implementing digital-first and emerging technology strategies preferred; proficiency with newspaper design, pagination, and newsroom technology is a plus.

Work Location

Overview

The Overlook is hiring sharp, curious news journalists to cover local meetings, community events, and underreported stories in the mountaintop towns of Windham and Hunter. This is a paid, flexible opportunity ideal for freelancers, early-career reporters, and seasoned journalists who believe in the power of local news.

Responsibilities

  • Report and write at least two original news stories per week.
