NYPA Announces $10,000 First Amendment Essay Contest Winners

ALBANY, NY – The New York Press Association (NYPA) Foundation announces the winners of its second annual First Amendment Essay Contest for 11th and 12th grade high school students in New York State.  Designed to foster knowledge and understanding of the First Amendment, the Foundation’s annual statewide competition offers entrants the chance to win $10,000 for college.  Students were asked to interpret the First Amendment, or one of the five freedoms guaranteed by the Amendment, in their essays.

First place winner Mitchell Ellmaver, submitted by the Sullivan County Democrat, competed against more than 175 other entrants for the honor and grand prize of $10,000.

Second place winner Anne Krengel, submitted by the Manhattan Times, will be awarded $250. Submitted by the Pelham Weekly, Anne Aust took third place, winning $100.

The winning entries will be published in the local newspaper which submitted the entry into the statewide competition, and Mitchell’s grand prize winning essay will be published in community newspapers statewide during “Sunshine Week,” March 16-22.  Sunshine Week, a nationwide initiative coordinated by the American Society of Newspaper Editors, aims to educate the public and promote freedom of information and open government.

The NYPA Foundation supports individuals and institutions in their efforts to support the highest standards of journalistic excellence.

New York Press Service Electronic Tearsheet Program

In an effort to use updated technology to better serve you, NYPS launched an electronic tearsheeting program more than a year ago.

Newspaper Benefits:
(a) Cost Savings: No need to send us 3 copies of your newspaper or
tearsheets anymore. This adds up to a substantial postage savings over
the course of a year.
(b) Quicker Payment: E-tearsheeting has streamlined the billing process. Agencies can access their completed invoices and tearsheets within 2 weeks of an ad running. This means faster payment to you.
