NYPA Announces $10,000 First Amendment Essay Contest Winners
ALBANY,
NY – The New York Press Association (NYPA) Foundation announces the winners of
its second annual First Amendment Essay Contest for 11th and 12th
grade high school students in New York State. Designed to foster knowledge and
understanding of the First Amendment, the Foundation’s annual statewide
competition offers entrants the chance to win $10,000 for college. Students
were asked to interpret the First Amendment, or one of the five freedoms
guaranteed by the Amendment, in their essays.
First place winner Mitchell Ellmaver, submitted by the Sullivan
County Democrat, competed against more than 175 other entrants for the honor
and grand prize of $10,000.
Second place winner Anne Krengel, submitted by the Manhattan
Times, will be awarded $250. Submitted by the Pelham Weekly, Anne
Aust took third place, winning $100.
The winning entries will be published in the local newspaper which
submitted the entry into the statewide competition, and Mitchell’s grand prize
winning essay will be published in community newspapers statewide during
“Sunshine Week,” March 16-22. Sunshine Week, a nationwide initiative
coordinated by the American Society of Newspaper Editors, aims to educate the
public and promote freedom of information and open government.
The NYPA Foundation supports individuals and institutions in their
efforts to support the highest standards of journalistic excellence.

2008 paid summer internship applications now being accepted
Applications are now available for the 2008 Howard Palmer
Internships, sponsored by the NYPA Foundation. Students selected for the program
will be matched with a local, community newspaper and receive a net stipend of
$2,600 for the eight-week internship. All applications due by January
28th, applications should be sent to the attention of Rich Hotaling.
